City To Replace Playground Equipment At Parks

Some of Windsor's playgrounds are getting a makeover thanks to a city council vote.

Councillors voted unanimously this week to spend $7.4-million on a plan to replace the equipment, and layout on 28 playgrounds across the city. The vote comes as the city received a report on the state of the city's playgrounds, which remain very popular with residents and visitors alike.

There are 125 playgrounds within the Windsor city limits.

In 2015, play structures at 12 parks were removed because they no longer met health and safety standards. Structures at another 16 parks were removed this year.

The report presented to council indicated that playground equipment typically has a usefulness of 15 to 20 years.

Larger parks in the city receiving new playground equipment include Realtor, Malden, Atkinson, Alexander Park along the riverfront, and North Talbot in south Windsor.

Smaller parks include the Oakwood Community Centre, Brumpton, and Ypres.

The $7.4-million in funding includes a pre-commitment of over $650,000 from the city's 2018 Capital Budget.

The city is expected to begin ordering the new equipment and installing it almost right away, though the report says it may take up to two years for all 28 playgrounds to get new structures.
