Another Gong Show At Essex Town Council

Essex Councillor Randy Voakes is losing two months salary for, what's being called, his erratic behaviour against the other councillors.

The town's integrity commissioner reported Tuesday night at the council meeting that the other five Essex councillors have complained about his repeated "bad temper, vulgar language and disruptive behaviour."

Voakes wanted to appeal the unanimous decision of council but got warned and was eventually kicked out of the meeting.

Voakes says the pay cut will cost him about $4,000, but quickly adds that the report against him will likely cost taxpayers ten times that.

"I don't hold it against the integrity commissioner because the tools he had to work with are the tools that council gave him, and they gave him deceit and lies," says Voakes.

He says he will continue to attend meetings.

Tuesday's meeting was adjourned for about 20 minutes while the integrity commissioner was escorted out by the OPP to ensure his safety, and while Voakes talked with around two dozen supporters outside council chambers.

Voakes supporter Glen Mills calls Essex Council's refusal to let Voakes defend himself "disgraceful."

Voakes didn't get an answer about appealing the pay cut and says it's too soon to say if he'll run for mayor, despite being urged by his supporters.

"I'm not worried about the mayor's seat right now, even though I'm getting urged to run for mayor and people are wanting me to run for mayor. Right now, I'm going to take care of the issues at hand and the business at hand," Voakes says.

Voakes says he won't be silenced or change his ways.

"I'm not influenced by people taking money away from me and figure that's going to stop me. It's not, I'm not for sale. You can't buy me, I'm not for sale," says Voakes.
