Windsor Breaks Record, But That Was Nothing

Environment Canada says 140 mm of rain was recorded Monday night in Essex.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Geoff Coulson says a volunteer recorded some impressive amounts near North Malden Rd.

"Across the county, we're seeing a variety of different rainfall amounts," says Coulson. "Anywhere from the 50 mm range all the way up to 140 mm."

Tecumseh Mayor Gary McNamara believes his town got more than that.

"Some places got 4.7 inches (119 mm) of rain to almost 7.5 inches (190 mm) of rain," he says.

At Windsor Airport, 57.4 mm was recorded, not as impressive as other areas in the county, but still good enough to break a long-standing record.

"[The] previous record at the airport for that date in history was 43.2 mm back in 1961," says Coulson.

"This was a series of storms lining up coming up from the south and moving northwards," Coulson explains. "Basically, hitting the same area in parts of Essex County repeatedly."

Windsor-Essex can expect even more rain Tuesday, but Coulson says so far, the showers and thunderstorms predicted should be as intense, although forecasters are keeping their eyes on the radar.
