Warning Incomplete Vaccinations Could Result In School Suspensions

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is warning parents to update their child's vaccinations, or the student could be suspended from school.

The health unit has been reviewing the vaccination records of all students registered in Windsor-Essex school boards.

The parents and guardians of those born in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 with incomplete immunization records should have received a notice warning of possible suspension as of September 28, 2017. Approximately 3,700 letters were sent out containing information on how to update vaccinations and notify health officials.

"We will be providing extra nurses in the immunization clinic to assist those who do not have a primary healthcare provider to get missing vaccines before the suspension date," says Judy Allen, manager of the Healthy Schools Program.

The health unit also says there are four ways to update your child's immunization record. Parents can call the Health Schools Department at the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit at 519-258-2146 or 1-800-265-5822 ext. 1222. Up to date information can be submitted on the health unit's website, faxed to 519-258-7288, or submitted in person at the Windsor office at 1005 Ouellette Ave., in Essex at 460 Fairview Ave. Suite 215, or in Leamington at 33 Princess St.

Students who continue to have incomplete records could be sent home from school for up to 20 days. Only once the child's records are complete will they be allowed to return to class.

New as of September 1, 2017, parents and guardians who request a nonmedical exemption will have to attend an educational session provided by the health unit. The class is intended to help parents make an informed decision regarding vaccinations.
