Windsor Regional Hospital is reviewing security protocols after a violent stabbing at the Ouellette Campus over the weekend.
The incident occurred on Saturday around 6:30pm, when a mental health patient returned to the hospital after an approved day pass. As he was being escorted back to the ward by his father, the 17-year-old male allegedly stabbed a female patient in the back of the neck, who was also admitted in the mental health ward.
"We have a mental health patient on a day pass, that if he made it to the unit would have been searched at the unit. Is there a way to do that quote 'search' in advance of him or her getting into the physical space of the hospital?" asks hospital CEO David Musyj.
He says they'll be addressing those concerns but they want to make sure they don't go too far.
"It's how far do we push that while balancing the rights of the mental health patients as well as our other visitors who are visiting loved ones. We don't want to make it difficult for them to visit their loved ones," says Musyj.
The 26-year-old woman who was stabbed is recovering from her injuries and will be returning to the mental health unit shortly.
The 17-year-old suspect, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has been charged with aggravated assault.
