Amherstburg Considers Again Extending Deferrals Of Development Fees

A report to Amherstburg Town Council recommends offering residential home builders a deferral of development fees for another year.

Amherstburg first initiated the program in 2007 when home starts fell. Since then, it has offered builders the opportunity to apply for a deferral of development fees in a bid to boost home construction.

Housing starts have been below expectations once again, so the town's building department is recommending the council again offer the program. In July, housing starts fell across Windsor-Essex by 8% over July 2016.

Councillors will debate the merits of the recommendation Monday night.

Only home builders can apply for a deferral for up to 18 months, but the report says most of the fees are paid back within six months to a year.
