Kingsville Says No To High-Rise Condo Project

A packed council chambers helped Kingsville Town Council say no to a developer who wants to build a ten to 15 storey condo project on Main St. E.

The developer offered to tear down existing buildings at Main St. E and Jasperson Dr. and erect a 95-unit residential project with retail space on the ground floor.

Residents were not impressed saying the project does not fit with the Victorian flavour of its surroundings. Others thought it was the scale of the project that was offensive.

"Our currently largest building in Kingsville is just over three storeys," says Mayor Nelson Santos. "We have one coming on line that is about six storeys. A ten-storey building -- that would be the first building you see coming into town."

Traffic congestion is another concern residents posed.

Santos says as far as council is concerned, the project is dead. However, the developer could appeal the decision to the Ontario Municipal Board or re-submit a scaled down version of the project and go through the process again.
