Lasalle Mayor Gives County Road Rash

The mayor of Lasalle is frustrated with Essex County Council over, what he calls, a broken system.

Ken Antaya says his town pays its fair share to the county but gets little in return when it comes to roads and trails.

Antaya is annoyed with constant delays and hiccups to address road shortcomings and linkage, especially on Malden Rd. through Lasalle.

"We began discussing it at least three years ago, and even in the term prior to that, there was evidence that the distribution of county roads and connecting links were either ill defined or ill distributed," says Antaya.

He's also disappointed that a county list of cycling trails submitted for provincial funding doesn't include any in Lasalle or Tecumseh.

Antaya says some roads in the county shouldn't be county roads and they need to be fixed quicker.

"In Lasalle, we have contributed probably 15% or 16% of the county tab, and as far as the roads are concerned we receive less than 5% of the benefit," the mayor says.

Antaya says better standards for county roads must be put in place right away to determine which ones qualify to be connecting links.

"We'd like to see some equity and fairness to the system and take a bit of pressure off our own budget and transfer it to the county to get a bit more return," Antaya says.

The county is in the process of gathering data and hiring a consultant to get a roads plan ready for next year.
