Tecumseh Approves Bylaw To Protect Dogs

Tecumseh has a new bylaw that should protect dogs from being tied up too long.

Council approved a bylaw Tuesday night stating that dogs cannot be tethered outside for more than four hours a day.

Mayor Gary McNamara says it's about protecting dogs from cruelty.

"It's to make sure that all animals are treated with compassion. Not only in hot summer weather, but also when we have really bad winters that they're taken care of in a humane fashion," says McNamara.

Tethering bylaws vary across Windsor-Essex.

Essex and Kingsville have 12-hour limits, while Windsor and Leamington have four-hour limits.

McNamara says the dog control bylaw needed revision because it didn't have a tethering component before.

"The Humane Society is not going to be looking over fences with a stopwatch. It's basically common sense has to prevail," the mayor says.

McNamara says similar tethering bylaws are working in neighbouring communities and he thinks it'll also work in Tecumseh.

"We're not reinventing the wheel in Tecumseh. We looked at other municipalities and how it's been accepted there and monitored, and it has gone very well," McNamara says.
