One Dead in State Fair Ride Malfunction

One person is dead and at least seven injured when a midway ride malfunctioned in Ohio.

It happened Wednesday night at the Ohio State Fair in Columbus. Multiple reports say the ride, called "Fireball", came apart when a portion of the ride crashed against something, throwing riders to the ground.

The person who died reportedly was thrown from the ride and killed instantly. WCMH-TV in Columbus reports that the person was an 18-year-old man.

Five of the people injured in the accident are critical, with one of the injured being a 13-year-old child. WCMH reports that at least three of those who were hurt have been taken to the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

Ohio Governor John Kasich has ordered the rides to be shut down, and released this statement:

The Ohio State Fair opened Wednesday and is scheduled to run until August 6. Rides are routinely inspected before the fair opens and are also subject to random spot checks by inspectors.

Traditionally, the governor of Ohio spends a night with a family taking care of show animals at the fair and performs chores with them.

This is a developing story.
