Charges Laid After Dog Starves To Death

The Windsor-Essex County Humane Society says it has laid animal cruelty charges against a Windsor man after the body of a dog was found near an abandoned building last March.

The dog, an unneutered pit bull-type dog, was found March 8 at the corner of Louis Ave. and Cataraqui St. in Windsor. An investigation revealed that the dog had starved to death.

At the time, humane society Executive Director Melanie Coulter told BlackburnNews.com that the dog likely suffered for weeks. She called it a horrifying case of abuse against a pet since a stray dog would have found food for himself.

A $500 reward was offered for information.

The suspect is charged with causing distress to an animal and failing to provide adequate food under the Ontario SPCA Act. Causing distress to an animal carries a possible two-year jail sentence or a $60,000 fine.

The unnamed man will appear in a Windsor courtroom August 28.

A release from the agency says it is its policy not to publish the names of individuals charged until there is a conviction.
