OPP Inundated With CRA Scam Calls

The Ontario Provincial Police in Essex County says it is getting a slew of calls again about the old Canada Revenue Agency Scam.

That is the one where the victim gets a call, an email or a text from someone claiming to be from the federal agency. Sometimes, the caller says the victim will be arrested if they do not pay a certain amount of money, while in other instances, the victim is told they have a tax refund owed to them. The caller asks for credit card information or instructs the victim to buy gift cards.

Most people are wise to the scam, but police issue a warning every few months to remind residents not to fall for it.

Now police are directing would-be victims to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. It can be reached online or by calling 1-888-495-8501.

The Canada Revenue Agency also has tips online to recognize this scam and others like it.
