Windsor Undertakes Bike Safety Audits

The City of Windsor wants to know how safe local roads are for cyclists, so it's undergoing a bicycle road safety audit at four locations.

The audits will take place at Lauzon Pkwy. and Tecumseh Rd. E, Windsor Ave. and Tecumseh Rd. E, Drouillard Rd. and Wyandotte St. E, and Walker Rd. at Ypres Ave. All four intersections have been named among the worst in the city for collisions involving cyclists, and three of them have no cycling infrastructure.

City officials hope to gain a better understanding of the conditions that influence safety so they can come up with possible solutions.

The first part of the process is information gathering, and Wednesday night, officials from the city and BT Engineering will meet with members of the cycling community at 400 City Hall Square. The meeting is in room 409 from 7pm to 8:30pm.

The next step will be to conduct field reviews. Officials will go out to those intersections during the morning and afternoon commute to watch how cycling traffic interacts with vehicular traffic. Observation is expected to take place Thursday.

A report identifying issues and recommendations will be written up for the city council to consider.
