GECDSB Approves Dual Campus Template

The Greater Essex County District School Board is another step closer to a new school in Amherstburg.

The school space template was approved by the board Tuesday night. The concept for the new school is a dual campus building for the students of General Amherst and Western Secondary School.

Trustee Ron Le Clair says it's a very unique school set up.

"It's an opportunity for enrichment for all the students from General Amherst and Western in terms of programming opportunities as well as maintaining the integrity of the culture that existed at Western Secondary School," says Le Clair.

Some trustees voiced concerns around keeping the two separate identities and not creating a new unified identity for the entire student body.

"How it actually plays out still needs some fleshing out. The concept is to provide that supportive environment that the Western students really need in that school that also houses the General Amherst population," says Le Clair.

The template needs approval from the Ministry of Education before they can move forward with the design. The school board also still needs to find land for the new school.
