Sarnia Sting Proposing Arena Upgrades

The Sarnia Sting Hockey Club is proposing some capital plans to improve the game experience for fans at Progressive Auto Sales Arena.

In a letter included on city council's Monday agenda, President & CEO Bill Abercrombie asks that council consider using ticket surcharge revenue to purchase a new LED video scoreboard and LED Fascia banner.

Mayor Mike Bradley says the city taxpayers facility needs the renewal.

"When the building was built, the Ciccarelli's stepped up and, I believe, wrote a cheque for $300,000 to put the score clock in," says Bradley. "After 22 years it certainly has come near to the end of its life."

He says the new technology is much more dynamic and makes events more exciting.

The new video scoreboard is estimated to cost $500,000.

The Sting say they're willing to finance a significant portion of that cost and are already working with the manufacturer to have the new scoreboard in place for the upcoming season.

A cost estimate for the banner is not yet known.

Bradley says the club has also expressed interest in reconfiguring the dressing room, office and training areas for approximately $100,000.
