The jobless rate inched up locally, provincially and nationally despite a significant number of new jobs added to the economy in May.
A total of 77,000 new jobs were created last month for a net gain of 54,500 positions, far above the 11,000 predicted by economists. Another good sign for the national economy is that more people were looking for work.
That adjusted the national unemployment rate to 6.6%
Statistics Canada says Ontario, along with Quebec and British Columbia had the biggest job gains.
In Ontario, the jobless rate was up to 6.5% from 5.8% in April, while B.C.'s numbers came in at 5.6%, up one-tenth of a percentage point.
Quebec recorded its lowest unemployment since the agency started collecting date in 1976. It was 6%.
In Windsor, it was 5% -- up from 4.9%.
Up Hwy. 401, London's rate went up to 6.2% from 5.7%.
Guelph continues to enjoy the lowest unemployment in the country at 3.9%, while in Calgary it was 9.3%, unchanged from the month before.
