Spitfires Dealing With The Attention Of Being Champs

Interest from National Hockey League clubs is causing a bit of uncertainty about the future within the Windsor Spitfires organization.

Spitfires head coach Rocky Thompson has already accepted a job as head coach of the Vegas Golden Knights' AHL affiliate Chicago Wolves.

"Ultimately, I want to be a head coach in the NHL one day," says Thompson. "So if an opportunity comes like this, and it was a great opportunity, as sad as it is to leave [Windsor], it's an excitement that I'm eagerly looking forward to."

Meanwhile, General Manager Warren Rychel confirms that he has been on the phone with a couple of NHL teams regarding management positions.  However, he says it is going to take a lot to tear him away from Windsor.

"I live five miles from the rink, I'm part owner of the team, I love dealing with the kids every day, I make my own schedule, I have great scouts, I have great office staff, I love coming here," explains Rychel. "So for me to leave, it's got to be pretty special."

Focusing on the Spitfires, the Windsor GM sees Trevor Letowski, who served as associate coach with the team last season, as the logical choice to replace Thompson as head coach.  But Rychel adds that Letowski is also getting a few calls from NHL franchises right now regarding coaching jobs.

Rychel is hoping to have concrete answers as to where everyone could be going, and who will be the next head coach of the Spitfires, within two or three weeks.

It has only been 11 days since Windsor beat the Erie Otters at the WFCU Centre to claim the 2017 Mastercard Memorial Cup championship.
