Detroit Grand Prix Sweep for Rahal

Graham Rahal made history Sunday at the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix.

The 28-year-old IndyCar Series driver from Columbus, Ohio became the first driver to win both Duals in Detroit when he took the second race on the race's Belle Isle road course. Rahal overcame a red flag and a caution issued in the final few laps of the race to sweep the main events on the weekend.

Rahal, the son of racing legend Bobby Rahal, is the first IndyCar driver to sweep a doubleheader since New Zealand driver Scott Dixon did so four years ago at the Honda Indy Toronto.  The elder Rahal won the Detroit Grand Prix in 1992, so the two Rahals are also the first father-and-son drivers to win on Belle Isle.

Rahal led 41 out of 70 laps Sunday.  He managed to stay ahead of Josef Newgarden, who had been gaining on Rahal until the red flag came down during the 67th lap of the 70 lap race. A blown turbo on the car raced by American Spencer Pigot put him out of the race and prompted the red to come out.

With the American Newgarden finishing second, Australian Will Power came in third.  Japanese driver Takuma Sato finished fourth. The reigning Indianapolis 500 champion had won the pole in Sunday's Detroit race and had set a Belle Isle qualifying track record at 114.831 mph.
