Public Input Needed On Amherstburg's New High School

The Greater Essex County District School Board wants to know what you want to see in its new high school in Amherstburg.

It has launched an online survey to gather input from the public, and it closes June 9.

The new school will take students from General Amherst High School and Western Secondary School in Amherstburg.

Board spokesman Scott Scantlebury hopes people keep their expectations realistic.

"Obviously, not everything that people wish for will be possible because, of course, we're limited by budget and staffing constraints," he says.

The new school will house about 850 students and could open in the next couple of years.

"Once we begin the design phase, which takes about nine months to a year, there are approvals from both our board and the Ministry of Education on the design, as well as the budget," says Scantlebury. "There's the tendering process, and then construction of a high school takes between 14 and 16-months."

As for the location of the new school, Scantlebury says the board is close to finalizing a deal.

"There are still some options in the Amherstburg area," he says.
