Catholic Board Approves Name Change for School

The Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board has signed off on a name for a new school.

At the board's meeting Tuesday night, trustees chose a variation of a name voted on by students at St. Bernard/St. Jules Catholic Elementary.  The students chose the name St. Mother Teresa Catholic Elementary School, but following a motion from trustee Fred Alexander, the board voted to call the school St. Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Elementary School.

The name will be given to a new school building currently under construction next to the current St. Bernard school, adjacent to Ford Test Track Park.  St. Bernard and St. Jules will be consolidated to start the 2017-2018 school year this September.

The new school name comes after a process set by the board in which a timeline was set and consultation was made with the advisory council of St. Bernard/St. Jules and their staffs.  The naming process was launched as part of Catholic Education Week in late April under the theme "Walking Forward Together."

Students chose St. Teresa of Calcutta over the names Holy Trinity and Pope Francis Catholic elementaries.

The new school building is expected to be ready by the start of the new school year.
