Death Investigated at Detention Centre

Authorities are investigating the death of a female inmate at the South West Detention Centre.

The Ontario Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services says that the inmate was found unresponsive by corrections staff Sunday morning at the facility, located on the outskirts of Windsor.

"Correctional staff called 9-1-1 and performed first aid until the ambulance arrived. The inmate was transported to hospital where she was pronounced deceased," says ministry spokesman Andrew Morrison in a statement provided to Blackburn News.

There will be an autopsy Tuesday.

The identity of the inmate is not being released at this time due to concerns over privacy as well as the disclosure of confidential medical information.

The facility opened in 2014, and this is the first reported death there.  Morrison says a full investigation will be conducted to determine what happened.

"The Office of the Chief Coroner conducts a death investigation to determine the cause and manner of death," says Morrison in the statement.  "The ministry conducts an internal investigation to determine whether all ministry policies and procedures were followed with respect to the care and custody of the deceased."

Windsor Police will also contribute to the investigation to see if the death was the result of any criminal activity, says Morrison.  If the death was the result of unnatural causes, a full inquest will take place.
