UPDATE: Rocker Chris Cornell Dead At 52

Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell has died.

A representative for Cornell confirmed the death to the Associated Press.  Cornell was 52.

The death in Detroit Wednesday night was sudden and unexpected.  According to reports, Cornell's wife had called and asked a family friend to check on his well-being.  The friend ended up forcing open the door to Cornell's hotel room at the MGM Grand Detroit and found him on the washroom floor, according to Detroit police.

The Wayne County medical examiner's office has confirmed the death as a suicide by hanging.

Soundgarden was in the middle of a national tour and was expected to play in Columbus, Ohio Friday night.  The band had played a concert earlier Wednesday night at Detroit's Fox Theatre.

The band formed in 1984 and is considered a seminal band of the grunge rock movement. It's debut album, "Superunknown", in 1994 topped the Billboard 200. It's second album "Down on the Upside" peaked at number two.

The band went on hiatus in 1997.
