Andrew Williams has been sentenced to six months in jail after a train killed two of his children in Lakeshore in June 2012.
The 32-year-old was convicted of dangerous driving causing death and bodily harm last month.
Justice Kirk Munroe told the court that a reasonable driver doesn't ignore signals. He took into account Williams being a good father and showing remorse, but said, ultimately, he failed to protect his children.
Williams' uncle, Mark Williams, says the family will continue to support Andrew but is devastated.
"Nobody can punish him any more than he's been punished himself. Our family is a huge family and right from the youngest to the oldest we've all been devastated," his uncle said..
Williams is also sentenced to two years probation and can't drive for five years.
Two other children survived the crash, but one is severely disabled.
Assistant Crown Attorney Walter Costa says it doesn't matter what the sentence is because karma will impose its own sentence.
"If he truly is a caring loving father, this should haunt him for the rest of his life... period. If it were me, it would devastate me," said Costa.
Costa said it doesn't matter how much he's suffered already, because he's not the one who's dead.
"He's not the one that's dead, it's his children that are dead because of his conduct. They're the ones that suffered," Costa said.
