University Tuition Fees Rising

Tuition at the University of Windsor is going up again.

Students continue to voice dismay over the escalation of fees as they continue to rise above the rate of inflation.

"So many of my collegues and members of my family have really incredibly large debt, including those who went to the University of Windsor. I've known students who had to drop out part way school because they couldn't afford to pay tuition any more," says student advocate Bree Arbor.

For domestic student rates are going up on average 3%, as mandated by the provincial government. Some programs like engineering are going up as much as 5%. Fees for international students are rising exponentially more, and vary from program to program.

"The university really uses international students as cash cows.  It's really unfortunate because they are usually in the most precarious situations; being here without the ability to really work legally as the fees increase, without necessarily knowing before they move here," says Arbor.

University President Alan Wildeman says tuition at the University of Windsor for domestic and international students remains competitive with universities across the province.

"Certainly [international tuition fees] aren't regulated by the province, so they are higher than what you would see for domestic enrollment, but we are very careful not to get ourselves out of the range of what other institutions are doing," says Wildeman.

He says the institution continues to increase tuition because they have not received an increase in government grants while wages and benefits continue to increase.
