Run For Rocky Raises At Least $104,000

Five years after Rocky Campana died, the fundraiser named in his honour has raised $383,000 to support services in Windsor-Essex for gay and lesbian youth.

The Campana family held the final edition of Run For Rocky on April 9 and organizers say donations are still coming in. So far, the event this year has raised $104,000.

Although the family committed to five years, a legacy fund will continue to support Gay-Straight Alliances in high schools and post-secondary schools in Windsor-Essex for years to come. That will include GSA grants and scholarships, and money for continued education.

Windsor Pride has received 25% of the funds raised to help keep its doors open.

The City of Windsor has also committed to declaring April 9 Run For Rocky Day in the future so fundraising can continue.

Campana took his life in August 2012 at the age of 23. He had come out at the age of 17, and although his family was supportive, Campana struggled with society's acceptance of gay youth.
