Kidney Patients Get First Look At New Digs

A brighter, much larger space is expected to make a big difference in the lives of local residents living with kidney disease.

Member of Windsor Regional Hospital's Renal Patient and Family Advisory Committee Patricia Bajusz helped open the new Regional Renal Program building on Goyeau St. on Wednesday.

"There are 30 [dialysis] stations and, you know what, there's room for expansion, which I wouldn't be surprised they need," she says. "So fundraising -- everybody that can give something -- you never know who is going to be touched with kidney disease."

Bajusz cared for her husband, who suffered from kidney disease, and says he would have loved the new facility.

She believes simple things, like the building's big windows which allow more daylight in, will help with the mental health of patients. There are also television screens hanging in front of each station.

The Ouellette Campus' ten dialysis stations will remain in use for higher acuity patients. There are also seven stations at Leamington District Memorial Hospital.

Windsor Regional Hospital administers more than 40,000 dialysis treatments each year.
