The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is enhancing its mosquito surveillance program.
Local health officials say a new species of mosquito capable of carrying the Zika virus was found in traps last year.
Associate Medical Officer of Health Doctor Wajid Ahmed says this new "aedes" species is a day breeder and the mosquitoes that carry the West Nile virus show up at night.
He says the new mosquito requires a different trapping mechanism and trapping schedule.
Ahmed says no Zika virus was found in the region last year.
The $45,000 cost will be covered by the province and a third party provider.
