Tecumseh Ward Changes Still Up For Review

Councillors for the Town of Tecumseh continue to review and make changes to new proposed ward boundaries, even though they were approved last month.

Tecumseh held a special meeting Tuesday night after Ward 2 Councillor Bill Altenhof raised concerns upon closer review of the boundary changes and the population growth in the wards.

"What we're trying to do is make some minor alterations to the transition or the interface between Ward 2 and the new Ward 1 and Ward 3," says Altenhof.

The proposed changes include the addition of a fifth Ward by splitting up the current Ward 1 and shifting other boundaries around in an effort to create equal sized wards according to population. Altenhof says the consultant and the town also wanted to be mindful of historical neighbourhoods when adjusting the boundaries.

"To try to maintain the history and the feeling that people have in these various wards," says Altenhof.

Councillors will continue to work with administration on a new ward map to be approved at a future meeting. However, there will ultimately need to be a reconsideration motion to make any change official.

The new boundaries will be in place for the next municipal election in 2018.
