Hotel Dieu Grace Looking For Provincial Mental Health Dollars

Hotel Dieu Grace Healthcare is looking to bolster the community mental health plan.

Dr. Mary Broga says youth homelessness and child behaviour top the list of priorities.

Part of the improvements are implementing a central access system, which is like an E-health record that follows the person and aligning mental health services.

Broga says youth homelessness is growing across Windsor-Essex and strategies must be developed.

"If the ministry starts seeing that there's some trends, there may be more provincial impetus on that and sometimes even funding might come with that," says Broga.

Broga says she's witnessed year to year progress in resolving mental health issues because people are getting less duplication and shorter wait times for services.

The plan still needs provincial approval.

Broga says children in junior and senior kindergarten are often showing up to school with enormous behavioural issues that have not been identified before.

"Now we have those partnerships, we have people in our helping professions who are coming out to legal aid talking with parents about the needs of their children so we can get them the help they need," she says.

Broga says it's the first year youth homelessness has been a top priority.

"The ones that are facing this issue is quite extensive. It really does undermine their ability to achieve their educational goals or to seek employment," Broga says.
