Essex Seeks Public Input On Council Structure Review

The Town of Essex hopes there is a big turnout for its public meeting on changes that could affect the next municipal election.

Watson and Associates Economists Ltd. is carrying out a council and ward review. It will include suggestions on the size and number of electoral wards and if the deputy mayor should be elected.

Right now, councillors chose amongst themselves who will serve as deputy mayor.

"It's been almost 20 years since amalgamation," says Town Clerk Rob Auger. "Council is conducting this review to ensure that the ward and council structure continues to provide a system of effective and equitable representation for all residents."

The meeting starts at 6pm at Camoes Portuguese Club at 290 Sinasac Ave. W in Harrow.

Representatives from Watson and Associates will be there to gather public feedback, and a report will go to town council later this year.

Any changes to the ward and council structure must be confirmed in a municipal bylaw by December 31, 2017.

The town is also launching an online survey Thursday.
