Kingsville Looks To Clear The Air Regarding Homegrown Medical Marijuana

A Kingsville councillor wants more control for those who have licences to grow their own medical marijuana at home.

Larry Patterson says he's getting complaints about odour, and wants to know what the federal guidelines are for filters, waste and disposal of the drug, distance from neighbours and much more.

Patterson says there's an ongoing issue with some neighbours because a resident is growing medicinal weed, and the situation has deteriorated to the point car windows have been smashed.

Mayor Nelson Santos says one of the problems is that the town doesn't know who has licences issued by the federal government.

"It's new to us, it's not something we can regulate directly because it's not within our jurisdiction. However, we can still try to ensure that the licensee is operating with the full intent of the allowances the federal government gives," says Santos.

Town staff will come back with a report setting out the rights of medical marijuana growers compared to the rights of neighbours.

Santos hopes it identifies areas where the municipality has some say to avoid detrimental impacts to neighbourhoods.

"We have no say in the licensing , that is totally beyond the municipalities scope but it's something we can try to address in terms of the quality of the neighbourhood and property management and property standards the municipality does have control for," Santos says.

Santos says it's not a big problem in Kingsville, and thinks the trending towards larger medical marijuana facilities will get rid of some of the homegrown nuisance and abuse.

He says "it's a delicate balance. You want to provide and ensure that the residents that need the care and need the medicinal marijuana for their own health are not cut off from it, but then there are those who are abusing it and those are the ones that are causing more of the trouble across the region."
