Lakeshore Tackles Poop Problem At Marina

The Town of Lakeshore is going to tackle a rather poopy problem at its Belle River Marina before the boating season gets underway.

Town councillor Tracey Bailey says there were a lot of seagulls at the marina last season, and they left their mark. She says a lot of people complained.

"I'm hearing that next season will be even worse because it's been a relatively mild winter. We've had a couple in a row now," she says confessing relief town council has approved three strategies to keep the birds away.

The town researched what works at five other marinas, including municipal ones in Leamington and Windsor, and the privately-owned Puce Sandbar Marina.

What they came up with was stringing fishing line between poles.

"It's the vibration that the seagulls don't like, so they'll stay away," says Bailey.

Garbage cans at the marina will also be covered at all times, denying the seagulls one of their favourite treats.

The decks at Belle River Marina will also get a good wash.

"Last year was significant," says Bailey. "The decks were just covered with seagull droppings."

Free Wifi will also be added at the cost of $35,000 to the town.
