Investments For Families In Budget

The minister of families, children and social development says the middle class in Windsor will see noticeable changes in their lives thanks to the latest budget.

Jean-Yves Duclos visited Windsor- Essex County Regional Chamber of Commerce Thursday morning to answer questions surrounding the budget.

He says an investment in childcare spaces will mean more women in the workforce which will be better for families and business.

"We hear all the time that businesses need more mothers to help grow their businesses so if we can make a difference for women and mothers in particular it will make a difference for business in this region," says Duclos.

The government also announced changes to parental leave that give parents the option of taking 18 months instead of 12. At 18 months parents would only receive 33% of their regular income, while with a 12 month leave they receive 55%. Duclos says the law still needs to pass in the House of Commons so the change wont likely come into effect until late in 2017.

The government also announced $11.2-billion in affordable housing that will increase the supply here in Windsor and help with the current infrastructure deficit. Duclos says more details on the program will be released in the coming weeks.

"With the investment we announced yesterday about of a third of these Canadians will be taken out of these unaffordable and unsuitable housing conditions, that will be true for this area as well," says Duclos.

There are currently 1-million people waiting for affordable housing across Canada and about 3,000 in Windsor-Essex.
