Amherstburg Dedicating Officer To Mental Health

The Amherstburg Police Service is dedicating an officer to mental health calls in the municipality.

The officer will be working in conjunction with the LaSalle Police Service, which also has an officer dedicated to mental health.

Chief Tim Berthiaume says the officer will act as a liaison and create better relationships in the community in hopes of reducing emergency calls.

"We're hoping that it will be proactive. That the officer can work with people in our community to prevent these people from having to call the police and other resources," says Berthiaume. "The officer will actually meet with people in the community so that when they do go into crisis they will know what resources are available to them."

The new officer will be in place by next month and will go for specialized training before being deployed in the community.
