New Design For Festival Plaza Meets Opposition

Windsor Council has decided that more public consultation is needed before a new $13-million design for Festival Plaza is approved.

Plans include a new entrance at Glengarry for better access, new concessions, new seats, trees and possible screening or canopy in the concert area.

David Grimaldi of Windsor Parade Corporation says trees in the middle of the plaza are a deal breaker, and since Summerfest won't downsize, it may have to move.

"You can't put a bunch of trees inside Festival Plaza and think that festival producers are going to be able to use that," Grimaldi says.

Under the proposal, the Riverwalk Trail to the north of the improved Festival Plaza would only close during major events, and Macassa Bay cruise ship would move closer to Ouellette.

Grimaldi says the new plans for Festival Plaza are too rigid, adding "we were told we'd have to relocate."

Maggie Durocher of the Windsor Parade Corporation says there's no way Summerfest is downsizing to stay at the plaza.

"You have 22 or 23 rides and that's what we'd like to see, because would you want to shortchange our clients," she says.
