University Hosts Lake Erie Summit

The health of Lake Erie is the subject of a summit at the University of Windsor this week.

Over the next few days, 125 scientists, resource managers, citizens and students from both Canada and the U.S. are meeting to discuss algal blooms, farm runoff, invasive species and how climate change may affect Lake Erie.

There is also a special session planned to talk about the health of Lake St. Clair, and the St. Clair and Detroit Rivers.

The keynote address, "Lake Erie in a Nutshell" is open to the public Wednesday from 5:30pm to 6pm at the CAW Student Centre.

A release from the university says Lake Erie is in a state of change and scientists will try to understand how human and environmental influences are acting together. While some traditional pollution problems are disappearing, other threats are becoming better known.

Scientists will take stock of research completed over the past few years and ask what is needed to improve the lake in the years to come.

A team that includes the University of Windsor, Environment and Climate Canada, the Environmental Protection Agency and Ohio State University organized the two-and-a-half day summit.
