Windsor Fire Chief Pushes Smoke Alarms

Windsor's Fire Chief is urging people to install smoke alarms and practice home fire escape plans.

Bruce Montone says alarms must be installed on every storey of a home and outside all sleeping areas.

He says a home fire escape plan should be practiced with everyone in the home.

The Chief says “many fatal fires occur at night when everyone is asleep, so early warning is crucial to survival.”

Montone adds that all exits must be unobstructed and easy to use and choose a meeting place outside, such as a tree or a lamp post where everyone can be accounted for.

He says once you're out of the house, stay out and call 911 from a cell phone or a neighbour's home.
