Study Prompts LaSalle Police To Look At Sexual Assault Claims

The LaSalle Police Service is reviewing each of its sexual assault investigations over the last four years.

A recent study by the Globe and Mail in Toronto showed that nearly one in every five sexual assault claims in Canada are deemed "unfounded" by police forces.

In LaSalle, that number grows to nearly two thirds of all complaints, which is the highest rate in Ontario.

LaSalle Police Chief John Leontowicz says the review will be conducted by senior officers, with each investigation being independently reviewed and an outcome of each incident provided in a report.

The report is also expected to lay out whether or not criminal charges were laid, or why certain cases may have been "unfounded."

He says the review will also ensure that the victim's identities remain confidential.

The Globe's study showed the Windsor Police Service only designates 3% of its sexual assault complaints as unfounded, which is the lowest mark in the province, and among the lowest in the country.
