Tecumseh Maintaining Garbage Service Levels

The Town of Tecumseh has renegotiated a new contract with Windsor Disposal Services for an annual savings of over $55,000.

Town staff recommended reductions in service to bring the figure in line with the $495,000 budget but council rejected those reductions because of concerns from residents.

"I've heard loud and clear from my constituents on this one, that they are willing to forego potential cost savings to maintain this level of service," says Councillor Andrew Dowie.

Reductions considered by administration were removing grass clippings from yard waste in the summer and limiting the amount of garbage collected from each household. Council directed administration to continue exploring cost saving ideas and to bring them back for consideration.

During the garbage collection discussion Councillor Tania Jobin put forward a motion to exempt rural residents from the hard-sided garbage container bylaw. The motion will be considered at the next council meeting. If this moves forward it will also save money in the WDS contract.
