Local Hockey Official Under Fire For Facebook Comments

The Ontario Minor Hockey Association is investigating comments made on Facebook by a local hockey official about Windsor residents who were attending the Women's March on Washington.

Dean Lapierre, president of the Windsor Minor Hockey Association, has apologized for calling women from Windsor who went to the march in Washington DC "dumb" and a slur used to refer to women.

A statement from Ian Taylor, the executive director of the OMHA, reads, "These comments are offensive and have no place in minor hockey."

It goes on to say the association does not agree with or condone the statements and the matter is being investigated internally.

"We aim to teach our players the value of respect and acceptance of all members of our communities. Although this was posted on Dean's personal page, we believe he holds a prominent position and has a public profile within the community."

BlackburnNews.com has reached out to the OMHA to see what kind of penalty Lapierre could face for his comments and was told Taylor was not available Wednesday for comment.

The association's website has posted its code of conduct which states, "Members of the OMHA shall refrain from comments or behaviours, which are disrespectful, offensive, abusive, racist or sexist. In particular, behaviour, which constitutes harassment, abuse or bullying, will not be tolerated.

"Failure to comply with this Code of Conduct may result in disciplinary action -- including, but not limited to, the loss or suspension of certain or all privileges connected with the respective Member Association in the OMHA including the opportunity to participate in the OMHA and its Member Association activities and events, both present and future."
