Over Capacity Causes Cancelled Surgeries

Windsor Regional Hospital is starting to cancel some surgeries as they continue to struggle with over capacity.

They are currently operating at around 112% occupancy and have opened an additional 54 overflow beds. It's estimated it will cost the hospital around $200,000 a week to continue operating the additional beds.

CEO David Musyj says they need to increase bedded capacity throughout the system in order to take pressure off Windsor Regional Hospital.

"We need all of the facilities helping to support capacity. So we are working with Hotel-Dieu as we speak over at the Tayfour Campus," says Musyj.

He says the CCAC, ALSO and the long-term care facilities have also been helping to ensure they can move patients out of hospital when they are ready.

Many patients coming to the emergency room and coming in from long-term care facilities have acute respiratory illnesses and stomach viruses.

"We're looking at about three to four weeks and we don't see any end in sight at this point, certainly I hope that we have reached a peek but there really isn't any guarantee," says Ing.

To date four surgeries were cancelled at the Met Campus. Musyj says surgeries will continue to be cancelled on a day-to-day basis until the over capacity resolves itself.
