Government Helping Fund New Research Facility

A new $30-million Science Research and Innovation Facility is being built at the University of Windsor.

The facility will be an addition to the current Essex Hall and will provide an environment for student and faculty research in all areas of scientific innovation.

University of Windsor President Alan Wildeman says a key feature of the building will be known as the hive and will be built to encourage collaboration between faculty and students.

"We have a lot of great research going on at the University of Windsor. The Faculty of Science is involved in new materials, bio-medical research, and this new facility is going to help us create a hub to really galvanize that end," says Wildeman.

On Thursday, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Navdeep Bains was at the University of Windsor to announce a $14.95-million grant from the federal government through the Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund for this project.

"As a result of this investment, students, teachers and researchers will work in state of the art facilities to support the country's best research," says Bains. "They will work in close proximity with partners to turn discovery into products and services and to get to market faster."

The provincial government is also providing $2.56-million in funding for the project. The remainder will come from the university.

Construction of the facility is already underway and is expected to be completed by April 2018
