Leamington's Mayor Braces For Debate Over Roads

Essex County Council has to make a decision on $6-million in road projects in the new year.

Budget deliberations won't start until early February, but already Leamington Mayor John Paterson figures there will be a good debate about who pays for what along County Rd. 20 between his town and Kingsville.

Leamington wants to build a walking trail matching up with one along the same stretch within Kingsville's borders. The trouble is, the road is in very rough shape and will need rehabilitation along the same stretch. Earlier this year, Paterson pushed for the county to do it before the town started its project so, the curbs won't have to be torn up.

Right now, there's an environmental assessment underway.

"If there's some sort of resolution, I know our council's ready to start installing our trail, but not pay for the county road system."

Other projects on the list for the Leamington area include installing sewers and road work on Bevel Ln. and Pt. Pelee Dr., sewer lines to the north of Hwy. 77 and possible sewer lines to the west of County Rd. 20.
