Unifor Donates to Hiatus House

Unifor Local 444 has donated $7,556 to the Hiatus House in Windsor.

The women's shelter has been at full capactity for the last four months and the money donated will help the house run the best service possible for women and children seeking help.

Tom Rolfe, executive director at the Hiatus House said last Christmas, they were at 119% capacity at the shelter. He said Unifor Local 444 has been a great support to them over the past couple years.

"Today is the day we recognize their support," said Rolfe. "We're really recognizing the support that we've had from Unifor over the campaign."

For the fifth year in a row, Windsor is participating in the Shine the Light on Woman Abuse Campaign which started six years ago in London, Ontario. The campaign brings awareness and educates the community on domestic abuse.

Chair person for the Women's Committee at Unifor Local 444 Susan McKinnon said it was very important for them to donate to the shelter.

"The funds are really, really in need to help with their agencies, the support, the community, to make sure that women are safe," said McKinnon.

Unifor Local 444 is selling purple scarves to bring awareness to the campaign and raise money for the Hiatus House because purple has come to symbolize the fight to end men's violence against women.
