Spitfires Slay the Wolves 6-0

Cole Purboo and Luke Boka scored two goals apiece and Cristiano DiGiacinto and Aaron Luchuk each notched four points as the Windsor Spitfires beat the Sudbury Wolves on the road Saturday night 6-0.

Going into the contest, the Spitfires were one point behind the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the race for the lead in the OHL's West Division, with 42 points.  With the Greyhounds losing to the Erie Otters Saturday, the Spitfires now lead the division by one point.

The first period was scoreless, but featured Windsor on the shorthanded side of things twice, though the Spits were able to kill off both penalties.  Sudbury's Zach Wilkie found himself in the box twice in the opening 20 minutes.  There were only five shots per side in the period.

There would be no score until the 17:27 tick of the second period, when Boka broke the tie with his fourth goal of the season.  Shots on goal would remain low after 40 minutes, with Sudbury outshooting Windsor in the second period 9-8.  The Spitfires would lose Graham Knott in the second period, having been given a game misconduct for abusing officials.

Windsor doubled its lead to two goals just after the start of the third period, a power play goal from Purboo at 1:35.  The lead would become 3-0 at precisely the three-minute mark on Cristiano DiGiacinto's sixth goal of the season.  Purboo's second goal of the night would come at 9:24 of the third period to give Windsor a 4-0 lead, and the offence would continue to pour it on just 38 seconds later with Boka's second tally of the night.   Aaron Luchuk would complete the Windsor attack with a goal at 18:10 of the final period.

Michael DiPietro picked up the shutout in goal for Windsor, turning away all 22 Sudbury shots.

The Spitfires continue their road trip Sunday afternoon versus the North Bay Battalion.
