Leamington Man Raising Money For Prosthetic Leg

Ryan Toomer is a 19-year-old Leamington man who used to enjoy playing football, but in April he received devastating news.

Toomer has Ewing Sarcoma, a bone cancer similar to what Terry Fox had.

Like Fox, Toomer will lose his leg to the disease. He undergoes surgery next week.

His cancer treatments are covered by OHIP, but his mother; Tia Stramacchia says the cost of his prosthetic is not, so a GoFundMe campaign is raising the money.

So far, the campaign has raised over $8,000, but the cost of a very basic prosthetic can cost up to $12,000. That doesn't include the kind of leg Toomer would need if he wants to participate in sports or the cost of maintaining the prosthetic.

Stramacchia hopes to raise at least $20,000.

She also says she's considering organizing a Terry Fox Run in Leamington. Right now, the only Terry Fox Run is in Tecumseh every September.
