Remembrance Day Observed Across Windsor-Essex

Remembrance Day will see a number of ceremonies held throughout Windsor-Essex, paying respects to Canadian military veterans who served in times of war and peace.

Here's a rundown of what's going on where:

Windsor

An 11am ceremony is scheduled, hosted by the HMCS Hunter at the Memorial Cenotaph in City Hall Square.

Those looking to attend are asked to arrive by 10:45am.

City hall will be closed for the day.

The University of Windsor will also hold a Remembrance Day ceremony, beginning at 10:45am in front of Memorial Hall. The special commemoration will remember more than 160 Assumption College students killed in WWII.

LaSalle

Ceremonies are scheduled for 11am at the LaSalle Cenotaph Park.

The Sandwich Secondary School Band is set to perform during the ceremony while students from the high school as well as those from St. Thomas of Villanova will have an address for those in attendance.

Tecumseh

Town hall and arena offices in Tecumseh will be closed to observe Remembrance Day.

The Providence French Catholic School Board is holding a Remembrance Day ceremony at L'Essor high school found at 13605 St. Gregory's Rd.

Staff and students are set to dedicate a tulip garden to the memory of Essex area war veteran, the late Hector Roberge. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10:15am.

Lakeshore

Remembrance Day ceremonies are being held at both the Belle River Royal Canadian Legion and the Comber Royal Canadian Legion. Ceremonies are set for 11am.

Municipal offices in the town will be closed on Friday to observe the day.

Essex

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 201 is marching from the Essex Legion Hall to Essex United Church starting at 9:45am, followed by a service at the church and a Remembrance Day ceremony at the cenotaph at 11am, found right next to the church on Talbot St.

A return to the legion for 11:30am is also planned.

Another ceremony is also being held in the town as the Colchester-Harrow Legion Branch 338 is set to host its annual Remembrance Day Parade and Service at 1:30pm. There's a parade from the legion to the cenotaph at Harrow Veterans Memorial Park.

Leamington

The Cenotaph at Dieppe Park is where Remembrance Day ceremonies will be held, set for 11am.

There will be a wreath laying ceremony and speeches about WWI battles as well as a reading of the names of the war dead.

Later that night, Voices of Vimy will be performed by the Ghost Light Players team at the Bank Theatre in Leamington at 8pm both on Remembrance Day and November 12, while the show is scheduled for 2pm on November 13. The play, written by local playwright and author John Conlon, looks at the effects of war on those who served.

Tickets are $20.

Kingsville

The Kingsville legion is set to host a service at the cenotaph scheduled to begin 10:45am.

There's also a service planned at 1pm in Cottam at the cemetery on County Rd. 34.

Amherstburg

The Remembrance Day service is set to begin at 10:30am at the legion found at 281 Dalhouise St. in Amherstburg.
