Funding For New Schools

The province is providing funding to both local school boards for new schools in Windsor, LaSalle and Amherstburg.

After many years of waiting the Catholic board is receiving funds to replace Catholic Central Secondary School.

Paul Picard, director of education with the WECDSB, says the $26-million school will be located on the site of the former Windsor arena and will incorporate the Windsor Water World building.

"We could do quite a remarkable thing down there but we're going to have to imagine differently, not these big expansive one-storey or two-storey let's go up a little bit, let's be really creative," says Picard.

He hopes to have the school completed for the 2018-2019 school year.

The Ministry of Education also announced nearly $24-million for the GECDSB for a new high school to accommodate the consolidation of General Amherst High School and Western Secondary School.

The board is also getting $9-million for a new elementary school to replace Prince Andrew Public School.

The location of both schools is yet to be determined so the boards first priority will be to acquire land for the two schools.

Superintendent of Education with the public board Tom Awender says they expect it to be at least three years before the schools are ready for students.

"It does take time to acquire all of that, the design takes some time and then just the sheer size of the building you're looking at 18-months just construction," says Awender.

Both school boards plan to have public consultation to decide on special programs and amenities at the new schools.
