The University of Windsor has hired a new officer to implement its policy on sexual misconduct.
According to the university's website, sexual misconduct is defined as an act of violence and power over another person. Any sexual activity without consent is sexual assault.
Dusty Johnstone is a graduate of the University of Windsor and teaches undergraduate students to be sexual assault prevention educators.
She has promised to advocate for those experiencing or observing sexual misconduct.
"People can come to me to disclose an incident — maintain confidentiality, and file a complaint which will trigger an investigation," said Johnstone.
Johnstone plans to educate the campus community on the issue of sexual misconduct along with the help of the Bystander Initiative project at the University, which encourages participants to see themselves as potential bystanders who could intervene and stop an assault before it happens.
"Windsor has really set the bar in terms of education," said Johnstone. "We are in a place now to move forward to produce a targeted institutional response to a societal problem."
