Suspended Villanova High School Teachers Reinstated

The Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association says 11 teachers at St. Thomas of Villanova Catholic High School, suspended for insubordination, are back on the job.

The teachers were suspended indefinitely without pay Monday morning after they crossed the picket line set up by striking support workers.

Brian Hogan, president of the Windsor-Essex Secondary branch of the union met with human resources staff at the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board Monday and Tuesday. The reinstatement came after his second meeting with board officials.

"A grievance is being launched to get the letter out of their file and get the two days of deducted pay back in their bank accounts," he told BlackburnNews.com Tuesday night.

Hogan calls the suspensions a distraction from what he calls "the real issue," the strike. He's urging parents to call Unifor 2458, the Director of Education with the Catholic board Paul Picard and their trustees and call for a return to the bargaining table.

"No one's really talking about the real issue which is bargaining," he said.

The strike by clerical, office, technical, custodial and maintenance staff started ten days ago.
